How? I've never seen them side-by-side in person, just in Jeeps while I'm on my back at the junkyard. They just seem slightly bulkier to me?

A photo would be best, everything the factory put in is encased in black loom wrap, so if it's just two wires hanging out it's likely someone's addition.

As for the diagrams, YES, it's called the Factory Service Manual, or FSM: They are the definitive guide to working on your XJ. There are electronic copies to be had online for cheap, or cheaper if you get lucky. There's a site referenced here sometimes, I can't remember what it was or I'd link it. Pacific Coast Manuals maybe?

I never based comparison on value. Only on extra space and towing.
I saw a JK 4 door for sale on autotrader year 2008 for 15K.
I'd rather keep my XJ but my dad is looking more and more at the JK's
We've both put money into it so we both decide on it.

These are the only reasons I'm asking.

Alrighty. Well, the Unlimited JKs are certainly better for towing than an XJ, however 2008 still has the 3.8L minivan engine. If you've got the 4.0L now you won't be very pleased with its performance, perhaps even less so with a load hooked to it. You really can't beat a pickup with a V8 for towing.

OK please bear with me as I am not very savvy with any of this. ... our 97 Jeep came with an alarm key fob. It does not have power locks, or anything but apparently came with an alarm. Is there any way to remove this (we were told)- factory alarm? Long story short it has been sitting in our driveway draining the battery and unable to be started for any reasonable length of time. I just want to be able to take my kid to the doctors without having to take my husband's subaru. heres more info: it refused to start one day after going to the grocery store. we jumped it with the car and were able to get it home but I had to constantly give it gas. That was the first time I ever locked the doors. Apparently that started the alarm? because now the little blue light flashes constantly. When we try to jump it the lights flash and even the mileage display flashes. We jumped it the other day again and let it run for a while and turned off the alarm via the key fob like 4 times. it stayed on and we let it charge or so we thought. it wasn't connected to the car any longer. the next day it wouldn't start again. and here it sits. I dont care if i cant ever even lock it again I just want it to get me from point a to b.

Simple answer "yes". I don't know anything about working with alarm systems but there is NO factory alarm that ever shipped in an XJ. Security features were limited to SentryKey (need the chip key) and Remote Keyless Entry and that's it.

It sounds like you've got bigger electrical problems, possible this aftermarket alarm was installed incorrect and is now wrecking things.

ok thanks so much. electrical issues are also common here due to the constant unbearable humidity so i wouldn't be surprised.

x2 on this.. another big indicator that it's not factory is the flashing "blue" light. Most of the time, if the alarm is factory - in almost any vehicle - if there's a separate light for it, it's red.

Nevertheless, look for fused cables going to the battery, fuses in the fusebox in the engine compartment that are not listed in the diagram in the cover, or fuses in the interior fuse panel that are not listed. If it was installed by a retailer, they would have installed the supply power with a fuse in one of these locations. It's also possible that they could have used an empty fuse slot in one of these locations for supply power. If that is the case, look at the fuse diagram to see if there are fuses in any locations that do not correspond with options that you have (i.e. a fuse in power windows, but you do not have power windows - or - cruise control which you do not have, etc.)

Once you've located this, pull the fuse and that will kill power to the alarm. The best thing to do would be to remove the entire alarm system, but this will eliminate your problem until you can find someone you trust to remove it. It's hard to walk you through such a process without knowing what alarm it is as they are all very different and installers also differ in techniques as well.

Has anyone done a Jeep 2500 tail light swap? I kinda want them and I'm curious as to if they are plug and play or if I gotta get fried a couple of times trying to install them.

Default Bloody wife jeep

alright guys,
I'm stumped. The wife jeep is giving me fits. It's a 96 zj limited 4.0l. Its got the all time 4wd. I'm hoping this is something someone has some input in.

I have a random miss... Well it's more like a cross between a miss and "Oh my God, I'm gonna die! Wait no I'm fine now." It's in no way consistent. It'll do it under a load or idling, but I can't seem to make it do it intentionally. It's died a few times within a minute or two of starting. When it's not acting up it runs great

I've been working on catching up maintenance so here's what's been changed recently:
Distributor
Cap and rotor
Ignition coil
wires
plugs
fuel filter
air filter
prolly a few things I'm missing cause it's 130

Random things I haven't gotten to include:
There's a tick/rattle when under load from the undercarriage. Fairly sure that's a u-joint going bad.
Rear main is leaking
Intending to stick a thermostat in in cause it hasn't been done
shocks are shot
need to grease anything with zerks
reinspect/re-clean grounds
I've got some oil burning somewhere, but it's not a lot -- just enough to make it stinky.
Don't thing any of those are related but I thought I'd throw in everything in case something is more important than I'm seeing. Been meaning to get to most of that but I've been waiting for a dry day in Washington

Would a crank sensor do something like this? I've had one make thing want to not start, but it doesn't seem to me like the crank sensor would do that. Not really wanting to throw more parts at it till I have more than just my thoughts on the matter. Any help would be appreciated.

Like I said, I'm stumped guys.
