Hi all, im new here. I have a 98 jeep cherokee 4.0 liter engine. I bought it from a used car lot, the guy who sold it to me said the previous owner had got rid of it because it was not powerful enough to tow his boat. Anyway, heres my problem. After about 30 minutes of stop and go driving the engine will start to stall, This mostly happens when I try to accelerate, the engine will not do anything at all and go into sort of an "idle" until you let off of the gas. After this has been going on for a few minutes the engine will completely shut off when at a red light. Also, the engine always goes into this sort of "idle" mode, where the engine is on but it just isnt doing anything if you try to floor it(ive only ever tried to floor it maybe 3 times) even if it has only been running for 30 seconds for the first time of the day. And while all of this is going on and my foot is on the accelerator there is a knocking noise coming from under the hood, which sounds like its coming somewhere around the other side of the gas pedal.

sounds like episode 5 from the truck series, you have a blown engine. The knocking is no doubt a crank bearing, and the power loss is the rings.

It all sounded like a TPS issue right up till you said knocking sound... basically all this requires the engine to be pulled and rebuilt.

its not a hard loud knocking, its more of a slight small knocking thats coming from behind the gas pedal area under the hood.
