alternator thread
So I have recently posted threads concerning my over charge problem.
I just remembered when my brothers friend bought this xj before me he had got it in maryland drove to where I am in pa "near philly" he then looks under the engine why he didnt do this from the start is beyond me. And sees that the Alt was unplugged. So he drove the whole time from maryland to PA on the battery and he had to get tons of jumps. Now doing what he did with it unplugged driving that long. Can that damage anything other then battery. Maybe fry Regulator? Anyway I am replacing the alt even though its been tested and came back

The regulator is in the ECU, so no, it didn't fry it.
In fact since it's been running of the battery only, it's not likely to have fried anything.
He must have had a whooole lot of jump starts and chargings during that trip....

Cause 2 owners before me he had msd box with another ignition coil hooked up and was tapped into the alternator wiring.this is not in there anymore I redid wiring.cleaned all grounds all that is good.belt squeals replacing that.alt tested at 15v and is prettt beat looking. As battery acid all over it from last battery leaking from being overcharged.this is why I was asking if the reg was fried.

I didn't pick up that was a question regarding overcharging.
It must have been disconnected for a reason...most likely its overcharging.
Anyway, you were going to replace the alternator anyway you stated.

Yeah I am hoping thats what it is.but yeah it makes sense if the dude unplugged it to try and sell.then its probably the alt. But my question is if the alt is still tested good.idk if testing and getting 15v is good then can it still cause the overcharge.it did feel prettt hot after I had it on for even 5 mins

Batteries leaking....never a good thing. Sounds like you're on the right track. Let us know how you go after the install of new batt and alt. Take the opportunity to check the cables involved in the circuit, especially between alt and battery and grounds.

Yeah I checked the wires the were cut and rewired cause they use to be spliced into the msd box.but I went thru and checked the wiring redid it and used wire crimps its real tight then taped it. The battery isnt leaking now.it only did once when it was overcharged.

Have it load tested, if u want to keep it. Otherwise you safe and get a ne.w one and be done with the doubt.

Heres the update.... Got a new alt and belt put it on.... still same problem. This time all my gauges went haywire moving around like crazy then on seconds back to normal. Still gettingthe same overcharge problem. Put my ear up to the battery and could hear boiling.so we tried my brothers battery who also has an xj. Same thing happened with the overcharge... so now its making me think its the pcm internal voltag2 regulator. So I open it up and all is good bang it around "getting another one anyways" just to see what happens. NOWWW for the weird stuff... hook the pcm back up and it wont start I flashed the computer also. Wont start wont start then starts ok everything seems good then I hit the brake while in park engine light comes on. Rev the rpms up my dome lights get brightttt as I rev more they get brighter. Turn air on and it stalls out only stalls out when I turn my air on. Now what they heck could this be...
