Default Electrical fan rattle/groan

Hey all,

I did my best searching the forum to see if there was a thread on this but I couldn't find one, so here I am.

I have a '98 Jeep Cherokee Classic (4.0L, I6, 4wd). Lately, when I run my AC my electrical fan comes on (normal). But when I shut my Jeep off, the electrical fan gradually shuts off but rattles (it sounds like a gerbil running around under my hood). The fan seems loose or off track of some sort.

Also, when I run my AC and I am driving, every now and then I will hear a groan (2-4 seconds) coming from the same area. This does not happen when the AC is off.

I think the electrical fan might need to be replaced but I want to make sure that is the problem before I buy the part. Any ideas? Could these two things be connected?

I need the AC; it has been the high 90s to 100s the last 4 weeks here in St. Louis. It doesn't seem to be getting cooler.

Thanks.

-K

It is difficult to determine which you are referring to; the condensor cooling fan in the engine compartment or the evaporator fan inside the dash....
The condensor fan motor can be blown out with air while its removed from the engine compartment, but most times this only works for a while. You can order a replacement motor online.
Removing the condensor cooling fan is not difficult; remove the (2) 8 mm bolts at the top of the shroud disconnect the electrical connector and slide the shroud and motor assembly upward out of the engine compartment.
Remove the fan from the shaft by gently leveraging the hub upward with two flat bladed screw drivers and the unscrew the motor from the mount. The Bosch part number is usually listed on the housing.
Reassemble in reverse order.
