Default 97 xj sputtering cutting out and backfiring

I have a 97 cherokee just started doing this out of the blue.
It will idle fine and revs fine not under a load. Once driving anything off idle it spits and sputters and backfires but if you hold the throttle to the floor it runs fine at wot. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Have codes for o2 sensor but the jeep has none. It ran fine before.

It should have 02 sensors. And the symptoms you describe are almost textbook symptoms for a bad 02 sensor. If not 02 then possibly the throttle position sensor. There are test procedures if you do a search.

Are you trying to say the Jeep has no O2 sensors? It's the wires going to the exhaust/pipe by the muffler. Mine did this when the exhaust had a leak. Gave the sensor the wrong info. Caused it to run rich. Gas mileage sucked. Could also be dirty.

Tps is good. The bung for the o2 on the cat has a plug in it and also can not see another one.

I thought O2 sensors (or at least one) were essential for the Jeep to run right... after all some people call them air fuel ratio sensors...

Since your Jeep is a 97 will probably be fine, but at least for my '89 Renix, the auto shops don't even carry the right one. I have to order my O2 sensor from RockAuto.com... the auto shops (autozone/pepboys/carquest) all have the wrong O2 sensor in their computer system, I had a terrible time figuring this out initially.... they kept giving me a newer generation looking O2 sensor that would not fit even though the electrical connector is the proper setup, I would just be sure to bring the old one with you to compare
