Tranny Fluid?
I did a quick search I have heard to use dexron III or 6. Is this correct? I have a 5 speed manual transmission and I need to service this and my transfer case. What would you suggest I use? Thanks.

dextron 3 for transfercase
im not sure on this but i would use a GL-4 instead of GL-5 in the manual transmission if you can find it. im sure somebody will correct me if im wrong. they will both work but i think the GL-4 would work better.

Lets separate this a bit as we are dealing with several different questions and parts....
First.. the T-case requires Dex III.. it was originally built for Dex II. But Dex II is no longer available, so Dex III will work. Dex VI is a specially blended low viscosity synthetic. It was designed for certain transmissions to help their fuel economy. It is not the correct fluid for anything in our Jeeps...
Now the OP's 5-speed. In 1986 the V-6 used the BA-10 as its manual. The BA-10 requires a 75w-90 GL-3 fluid. Now GL-3 fluids are no longer available, so GL-4 or GL-5 will suffice. The BA-10 uses aluminum synchro rings rather than bronze, so the sulfur in GL-5 fluid will not hurt it.
If the OP has a T-5..very rare but they did use a few. He needs a low viscosity fluid with no sulfur. So he would want a motor oil.
If the OP has an AX-5 then a regular 75w-90 GL-3 oil was the original fluid. But once again GL-3's are no longer available. So a GL-4 would be used.
Now for the guys with the AX-15....75w-90 GL-3 was originally specified. GL-3 is no longer available. GL-4 is what you want. The sulfur content of the GL-5 fluid will damage your bronze synchro rings in the AX-15.
If anyone has a question, they are more than welcome to contact me.

Quoted for mad Truth!
Original Poster, Please be cautious of other posters who are not sure you which transmission is in question. There are different transmissions and a quick forum search will show that the debate about automatic transmissions does not seem to have an end in sight. That being said, a thread post that does not differentiate AT from MT may pull this debate into your Manual Transmission specific fluid question.
I use Redline MTL in my AX-15. Pennzoil Synchromesh is another option that is safe for yellow metals and is about 1/2 price. You should be safe with either of these in an AX-5 or 15. I know that Amsoil makes a great product too, but I'm not sure what it is called. I couldn't get it in BFE, Wyoming when I needed my oil change.

The Amsoil product is called Manual Transmission and Transaxle (MTF)

While the specific lube you are talking about may not use sulfur as part of its blend, to say any full synthetic has no sulfur is completely incorrect.
