Default 96 xj no reverse lights

I have a Cherokee manual that says the fuse for the reverse lights is fuse 11 and a 20 amp. Yet I looked under the steering column and the is a 25 amp fuse in spot 11. I'm confused did I look at this wrong? Anybody help me with this?

If you don't have reverse lights and there is a good fuse in there, do a search on for Neutral Safety Switch (NSS). It is a piece that attaches to the transmission. If it starts to get dirty, old, etc. the first thing that happens is the reverse lights go out

Oh ok was wondering what the NSS was and where it wad located. This is the 2 nd time its happened so I was unsure about the fuse or bulb. I'm pretty sure last time it was the fuse

mine does it. If I put into R and slightly push forward on the shifter the lights will come on, but Google it and lots of links come up

^^ that's the link I'm gunna use when I get around to cleaning my NSS. Go off that when you attempt it. But if I were you, I'd unbolt the taillight housing to rule out burnt out bulbs before diving into doing the NSS first, as it is a tougher job

I've got the same issue in my 95. I havent checked the fuse yet.

However, I have a bad NSS in my 97 parts jeep, I know because I have to wrench on the shifter all kinds of crazy while holding the key forward to find the sweet spot to start it.

In my 95, the jeep starts fine, everytime. Just no reverse lights. all other lights work. Hopefully its a fuse. I'll stay tuned in this thread.

I really don't feel like playing with the nss. I'm tired of building / fixing things on this jeep, every single thing has been a fight. Nothing has gone the way its supposed to. I think it hates me for saving it from the crusher.

I just don't wanna go fooling with that NSS until I know if the fuse is good or bad. In my book on Cherokees it says its a 20A but in the box under the steering wheel its showing a 25A. Possible blown fuse cause of the extra 5A ?

The fuse box cover should show which fuse is which. I couldn't tell you exactly where that fuse is. But go ahead and try replacing it with the correct fuse and see what happens. How many miles are on your jeep? Hate to say but more than likely it's your NSS. But you wanna rule out every other possibility before messing with it

NSS. It took me about 15 minutes to remove & clean...and I'm no mechanic. Easy peasy.

9 times out of 10, this'll do it for you. Good luck!

Definitely NSS.. It sucks but i bet its what the issue is. Although i did have a poor ground that was some of my issue. Some say its cake to clean but im pretty mechanically inclined and i couldnt get it free from the shaft. Id try n tackle it now before it gets bad and u develop the non starting portion too. Good luck man!
