Default 94 Cherokee rear wheel bearings and seals

Hello,
I have a question. I'm replacing my rear wheel bearings on a '94 Cherokee 4.0 2wd. After doing some research for the kind of axle I came up with a Dana 35. I could find no identifying tags on the axle. I ordered bearings and seals but when I removed the old ones I found that the new ones were to small. The old bearing part # is DB 50185. I need a good part # to order the right ones and the seals also. Can anyone tell me What axle I really have and what part #s I should get for it?

https://www.cherokeeforum.com/f2/axle-info-148057/ here's to help ID the axle you have.
If it's still confusing, post a pic so others can help you.

yes I see it now. I have an 8.25. I was confused because my filler plug is rubber and in the pic it looks like a bolt. I called auto zone and O'reilly's and gave the old part number . They referenced it back to an 8.25. Thanks for your quick response

You bet. The teller for the 8.25 is the square tab on the bottom. I figured you had an 8.25 if you ordered D35 bearings and they were too small. Good luck with the rest of your project.

I have another question. After everything is back together, wheels on I noticed there is in/out play in the axle shafts. Took the wheel back off and the drum and spun the axle. There is a rumble, sounds like it's coming from the gears and the in/out play is about 1/16 of an inch. Pushing in or pulling out does not change the sound. I did not notice this before taking it apart. did I misalign something? I didn't spin the gears while the axles were out and there isn't any wrong way to align the axle splines. Any thoughts?

The in/out play you describe is normal for an axle held in by C-clips.

When you removed the axles, did you notice if there was excessive
wear on the shafts at the point where the bearings roll? If the axles
are worn excessively by the previous bearings, the solution is to
install wider "repair" bearings instead of the normal width.

As for the rumble, describe it a little more. Does it increase with speed?
Same when coasting or accelerating? Does it change if you veer left
or right? Did it rumble before the repair? Did you refill the diff afterwards,
and with what oil?

The rumble I hear is the gears turning. I refilled the diff with 80-90 wt gear oil. After driving all seems normal. I can't hear anything while driving. My main concern was the in/out play. You are the second person who said it is normal. I did not notice any wear on the axles or diff gears that's why I was concerned about the play. The bearings are riding normally on the axles.

You should be ok.

Since you work on your Jeep, if you don't have one already,
you should get a factory service manual for it. The pdf version
is available here for $7.95:
http://www.pacificcoastmanuals.com/j...e_manuals.html

Also, download for free a Parts catalog from the Morris 4x4 site.
You'll want the 94-96 universal catalog. It has diagrams and
Mopar part numbers for just about everything on your Jeep.

I have a factory service manual. It did not come with chapter 3 which is the rear axle. Probably worth getting one with chapter 3. I will get that parts catalog you suggested. Thanks
