Default 93 Jeep Grand Cherokee Major Problems

My 93 Automatic Jeep Grand Cherokee has broken down 4 times in 200 miles and cost over a 1,000 in repairs PLEASE HELP ME FIGURE THIS OUT??? First it just shut down driving and I was told it was my Crank Shaft Sensor so the mechanic replaced it along with the plug wires, cap, roter, coil, and the kick down cable. With each and every break down the engine stops while I am driving with all the dash lights on as if I was still driving but it never starts again. It drove 35 miles and broke down again, this time they told me it was the brain so they replaced it. It drove 65 miles and broke down again, they said it was a bad coil. Well it broke down again and again it was the coil. Now I've picked it up and after 79 miles it won't shift at higher speeds and then sharply shifts down reving the rmps suddenly as if I put it into 2. Before the previous break downs it was having this same shifting issue which progressively got worse just before it broke down again. KAT

Go to your mechanic and ask for money back.

There are a million different things to cause this. Check your battery connections and have it load tested. Does it feel as if its not getting its normal power? Is it running hot?

I'm thinking along the same lines as Parsnip. Load test battery, clean battery terminals, and clean all ground connections. Best way is to take apart the connection, wire brush it good, and assemble it nice and tight, using some dielectric grease if you want.

Has anybody checked for spark or fuel when it shuts down? Or did they just throw parts at it and charge you a butt load of money?

Looks like the shop just tossed parts at it hoping one stuck. I agree entirely, next time it dies- check to see if fuel is missing, or spark, unless the new coil has fixed that issue.

Does the 93 Grand Cherokee use an AW4, or is it a different auto?

Early 93's have the AW4, the second half of the model year got the 42RE. Gotta look at the build date.

I agree. I understand how the AW4 works and it's control systems, but can't help much with a 42RE that doesn't shift right. That's why I was curious which trans is installed.

Default More Infor On My Jeep

OK it is the all the time 4 wheel drive also each fix got it running again but then it shuts down the exact same way after each fix. Yes to spark and fuel, coils throw spark but two burned out so far. I aslo forgot to mention that after the last now none of my brake lights work, its not the fuse for sure. I loved my wrangler but this thing is a night mare. Also this is one of the built in Canada models. KAT

Youve gotta get the battery and alt checked. If its burning coils something is backfeeding or over powering
