so, i am looking to get a jeep 2morrow. The issue is that the clutch pedal is very soft, and must be pumped to get it to go into gear. so, my first assumption is it needs to be blead. so, how do i do that?

second, if not bleeding, then i think its the slave cylinder. so, i am wondering where is that, and how hard is it to replace. my mechanical knowledge is pretty good, just not for jeeps/trucks. I work on vettes, hyundais, dsm, and some others.

i hope to be joining this forum as a regular user.

For starters bleed the system, the slave cylinder is INSIDE the bellhousing, means you have to take the transmission partially out of the Jeep to replace it It could be your master cylinder, but if you replace one you should to replace both of them

i thought the slave cylinder was ontop of the bellhousing?

i mean i have no problem dropping a trans. but this is my first truck ever.

Nope, from 91-93 the Slave was internal. 94-on(i believe, it may be a different year) the slave was external.

Get a haynes manual, it'll give you a walk through of the process.

do you have to pull the motor to get the trans out?

From what I know, you don't. You can take the transmission out of the bottom of the Jeep and leave the engine in.

This is one of those PITA jobs that I would farm out. I would also have them replace the clutch and Flywheel. I know I jus upped the parts bill 300 bucks, but that would be wise as the labor is just about the same for the job.

If you want to save this headache from happening ion the future and you have time... find an external slave cylinder bell housing, and get the clutch fork and the front bearing retainer off the other trans. Expect to pay around 200 for those parts. Lots of time you can find a wrexked xj with the parts for cheap. It also ups the parts bill by another 170 in expense for the master,line and slave cylinder.


I just swapped in an external slave cylinder into my 87 so I know a few of the headaches.

i just got copies of all the parts he replaced. clutch, flywheel, throw out bearings, and basically everything in the trans...

so it can be only a few things, bad master/slave cylinder, bad fluid, needs to blead, or the lines went bad
