Unfortunately my 91 engine has a big hole in the block/oil pan. Found a deal on an entire 90 jeep with no pink and a hundred and thirty thousand on it.

Hey, I just noticed SR...I went to SRJC, (got my smog license there), and still have a place on the river.

Anyway there is a process for an "application for a duplicate pink". It involves sending a registered letter to the last owner. If they don't respond in 30 days you get the pink. At least it waz that way years ago. The last time I went to SR DMV it was ludicrous, the line was in the parking lot. Pet. is better. For a small fee you can get a printout of the owners of record....(and that address)

There is only one phone number for the whole state of CA. It's all but worthless.

Yeah you helped on my renix smog questions. I was thinking of just putting my plates on it and driving it around. How often do they run a vin? Almost never. I never get pulled over. I'm pretty sure if it has no pink it has a **** ton of back registration.

Alright guys. The renix engine has a what I believe is a lifter tap. Almost silent at idle. However once you give it gas it taps loudly. Doesn't knock. Taps.
The more gas you give the louder it gets. I pulled the cover and checked the torque specs on the lifters, ran it with the cover off and everything looks great. Oil pressure and all. It runs smooth. Doesn't smoke. Do you guys have any suggestions? I am aware of the 4.0 common lifter tap but this noise can get pretty loud at high idle.

HA! I got stopped by the truck inspector CHP. He have me a ticket or two. Then the REAL CHP showed up to "show how it's done". Blond and blue, he looked like a someone from Hitler propaganda. Returning a borrowed canoe the day before, I had removed the trash from it and put it in my trunk. He found some weed in a smashed cigarette pack! He also checked the Vin# s. I legally own two identical black 1972 Toyota Celicas, but one wouldn't smog. I fessed up right away, and all checked out, so they busted my Celica and took it to jail and left me on the road in Latonville. NO Kidding! I hitched it back to CC, then came back in a week or so and bailed out my Toyota!

The "fraudulent use of license plates" is pretty serious I suppose. In this case I did OK, but they do and CAN check easily since it's right on the dash.

Can you post up a u-tube or something of the knock? Plenty of noise is normal from time to time, but hammering on acceleration.....might be a rod.

I decided against the plate switch. Its not a knock. Its a tap tap tap...... and gets louder as you accelerate. Almost no noise at idle. Hydraulic lifter fail? I'm not too familiar with the common problems of the 4.0 but I have built and won trophies at the drag strip with almost every form of vintage Detroit iron over the years. So I know what I'm doing when it comes to a simple pushrod engine. I'm just hoping for an easier route then a complete top end teardown. Youtube? I have an account but never posted a movie nor do I know how.

It use to be free as they only need to push a button to print out the history. Last I heard you pay $10 to find out how meany hundreds you pay to use the public right-of way. (a constitutional right). As you likely know, in CA you only pay a one time fee to not use your car at all. Maybe they did!

No nothing like that. Its not a knock. Its a tap tap tap...... and gets louder as you accelerate. Almost no noise at idle. That movie was a knock not a tap.

Yea...that's mine you know. It's been like that since almost last century I'm sure. Torque plate bolts are tight. That was after sitting for an hour in cold after being really up to temp. The camera mike really picks it up, normally it is not so noticeable.

Idk, maybe these days you can get the history on line. I wonder if you called CA DMV at one second after 8 AM if you could get a wait time less than 8 hrs?

I wonder if there's some carbon buildup on top of a piston.
Since you're familiar with engines, are you comfortable the "tap" is at cam/lifter/rocker speed and not crank/rod/piston speed?

Yeah its coming from the top end. I going to run a compression test just to get an idea of what I'm dealing with. Just looking at the plugs will tell me a lot about the engine. If I have to do a rebuild I'm still ahead. The engine block doesn't have a hole in it, has the Rubicon 4.5, thirty threes mounted on steelies, sye with drive shaft and anything else people will buy on craigslist + scrap value of body. Payed seven hundred for it. Wish I could post pictures. Can't figure out this stupid URL crap.

Was up under there to remove the suspension today. Noticed the O2 sensor was busted off and just hanging there still plugged in. Think that might have something to do with it? Defiantly explains why its running rich.

Uh, yeah. Ever do this?

Pretty easy.
Get a cup of water, preferably something like a Dixie cup.
With the air cleaner off, hold the engine RPM at 2000 RPM or higher and dribble the water from the Dixie cup, which you've pinched to look like a spout on top, into the carb or throttle body. Go slowly and the engine will bog a bit. Stop and let it recover. Repeat until the cup is empty.

I click "manage attachments" > browse > then double click on my jpeg photo. It doesn't really tell you it's loading or when it's done...but it does it.
Since I found the SD card slot I don't need to plug the camera it's self into the computer anymore.
