May I suggest the tuneup kit on Rockauto (UNITED IGNITION WIRE Part # 17621) - $24. Same price as just a cap would be at a local auto store if not less, and this one has good brass contacts. Then Champion truck plugs.

Default 89 4.0L Cherokee Laredo-engine troubles

Well I went to O'Reilly auto parts and got a MasterPro distributor cap for $15.99

And I didn't think that was to bad. Then the same brand rotor and that was

$9.99 and thought that was terrible price.

Got the E3 spark plugs. My friend from Alaska recommended them and said they are great.

They were $6.09 each and my total price was $62.52 and I didn't get the wires yet.

O'Reilly, CarQuest, & Napa did't have spark plug wires in stock for an 89 4.0L.

Guess I'll go on line and get them. I'll look at the ones recommended.

Tomorrow I'm going to install what I have and still hoping it was the distributor cap all along... never seen one this bad.

The engine kind of acted up this way when the fuel pump went bad.

Thanks! ~ Everyone

Cruiser, I'm going to do them all...I'm 56 years old and still learning.

I'm gung-ho about all you're doing except the E3 plugs. Take them back and get NGKs.

Default 89 4.0L Cherokee Laredo-engine troubles.

I got the cap and plugs in and drove the Jeep to work this am.
It appears to be running well.
Some of the plugs are hidden behind the air conditioning compressor, but finally got them out and the new ones installed.

Went to Rockauto on line and they appear to be pretty cheap, but the shipping almost evens it out to what I paid.
PartsGeek (on line) wanted $1. more on the plugs.
The cap and rotor were about the same price, but then had to pay like $10. for shipping.

Cruiser what's difference on the plugs you suggested?
It had Champion plugs in it.

The old plugs were black in color (every cylinder the same) and pretty warn out, plus the gaps were way off. Never seen a distributor cap this bad.

The main thing... I'm back on the road with the Jeep.
I have had this jeep about 2 years now and I don't know what's been done and not done.

Thanks!~John

Yea, "isn't that special!" I gotta feed a socket on #1 first, then get after it with either the wiggley or just a wrench. I disconnected the upper rad hose on the 2.5 last week to get to it's #1. I don't think anything is easy on a Jeep. OK, the windshield wiper motor is relatively easy.

Glad you got her goen...now you can break something!

Default 89 4.0L Cherokee Laredo-engine troubles.

Thanks!~guys, this time it was an easy fix.

I have one of those Craftsman flex head ratchet's, plus the universal joints, and it's funny how often I use a 1" extension to change spark plugs.

Getting my spark plug wires today.

Told my supervisor that I was late last Monday because the Jeep quit on me.
He said well you don't have much into it, so no great lost.

He was pretty surprised today when I drove in with it this morning.

It's nice to have a place to go when where guys know Jeeps.

Until next time!~John

This 4.0 will keep running with a lot of real problems going on with it, you should have seen a set of plugs, cap and rotor that another person posted a couple of weeks ago. It was a wonder it even ran at all, if you want real OEM parts at a good price check out Mopar America not Mopar Parts America.

Good to hear that you got it running again so easy a fix also. The only time I ever used WD40 in a Distributor was at a car wash after an engine wash down, too much of a wash down to get it started.

Thanks!~ Fred, read another post about cleaning the throttle body and the IAC??? (what ever that is)? Don't know if an 89 4.0L has the same set up.
I sure nothing was ever done to my engine.
Another thing (with out starting a new post) is that the exhaust on my Cherokee is real strong smelling and my friends old Wrangler exhaust smell is so bad it give me a headache to ride in his rig any distance. Was hoping that a tune up would help burn the gas more efficient. And if anyone asks... I redid the whole exhaust and EGR valve and even replaced the cracked in half exhaust manifold.

Thanks!~John

You should clean the throttle body/IAC and make sure the vacuum hose/tube between the throttle body and MAP sensor is perfect.

Eh? Three out of five. The MAP should be green, and that yellow eel should be cooking on the heat shield. OK 4.

I looked at them, but no I haven't done any of your tips yet.

I had the Jeep at the transmission place for most of the summer.

Before that I was working on the fuel pump, fuse box, exhaust, cooling system, brakes and axil seals, and most of the vacuum lines were disconnected.

Basically I have been working on it since I got it, but this Laredo was badly neglected.

I figure I got about 3 thousand in it now, but got it for free.

Well I read up on them again and pick a weekend and get it ready for winter...suppose to snow in Montana tomorrow.

Thanks!~John
