86 Jeep Cherokee 2.8L V6 Timing Adjustment.
I have a 1986 Jeep Cherokee with the 2.8L engine that I did the usual Tune-Up Basics to, Plugs,Plug Wires,Cap and Rotor,Fuel filters and Belts. I have already been told thru CF Forum that there is no Fuel/Air adjustment on the Carb but can I adjust the timing on the 2.8L? I did hook up my MATCO timing light to it and it seems to be reading on the digital readout that it is at about 43 degrees BTDC(Aargh),and the mark on the balancer is pretty far away clockwise from the 0,6,12 degree marks on the indicator if I am reading it right. I think the spec is suppose to be 12 BTDC. Also I did plug off the Vacuum Advance hose with a Golf-T. Also what is the long tube pointing upward that is next to the timing degree marks on the indicator? And is the 12 degree mark on the indicator 12 degree BTDC? I know there is alot of questions here but any help would be apreciated.

Sry never worked on a V6 and can't really help but that sounds like a lot of advance on the timing. I thing the distributor is timeable. I would try it anyway. You can always put it back to that spot if it don't improve any.

i did my timing on my 86 jeep cherokee 2.8 v6 and all i had to do was first hook up the timing light unplug the plug by the distributer which should slow down the engine a abit then loosen the distributer mounting bolt (not all the way off just loosen enough that you can rotate the distributer) then shine the light at the crank, there should be a line across it you wanna rotate ur distributer slightly and the line should move up or down on the degrees u want the line between 8 and 12 then when u have it in the spot tighten the bolt on the distributer thats it
