trans cooler -- even a small one -- will drop your temperature a significant amount. Add in a temperature gauge as well --- you can either tap off the trans, or s&K sells a few that you can run inline at the output of the trans cooler, which will give a more accurate reading.

Manufacturer recommends output of the cooler.
depends on what you want to read I guess. tapping on the output of the cooler lets you know that the cooler is doing its job... I guess tapping on the output of the trans does the same indirectly.

Yes, or inside the trans itself. See Ken's post for a good spot. Heat damages the transmission fluid first, the object of the gauge is to make sure temps are staying low enough for that to not happen. That means you want to know the hottest the fluid has been. Measuring it after it's been cooled won't tell you that, it could be cooking and you won't know.
