Default 4.0L blocks and heads through the XJ years

Are all 4.0 blocks the same (1990-2001 era) ??
Will an earlier head be a direct replacement for a 2000-2001 0331 head ?

Can blocks and heads be mixed and matched in these years? and all the computer stuff still work ?

thanks,
Slack

Blocks
Year............Casting No
1987-90......53005535 (8933002665)
1991-95......53008405
1996-98......53020569
1999-04......53010449

The main webs of the '96 and later blocks were stiffened with extra ribbing and a main bearing girdle was added to reduce noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH), making these the best blocks to build upon. All Jeep 4.0 blocks have a deck height of 9.450-9.456".

Not a direct replacement. Will bolt on and can be used but will need modified and adapter gaskets.

XJ Cherokee and ZJ Grand Cherokee 4.0L engine blocks interchange.

2000+ TJ Wrangler and WJ Grand Cherokee 4.0L engine blocks interchange.

XJ/ZJ blocks, and the 2000+ TJ/WJ blocks do not interchange without significant modifications. (1991 to 1995 YJ and 1997-1999 4.0L TJ Wrangler blocks will interchange in XJ/ZJ and visa-versa).

TJ/WJ 4.0L Engine blocks underwent clean sheet design changes effective in the 1999 WJ Grand and 2000 TJ Wrangler. These blocks are not interchangeable with XJ/ZJ engine blocks. The reason is motor mount bolt holes and belt driven accessory mounting bolt holes are in different locations, or not present at all, TJ/WJ vs. XJ/ZJ.

XJ: "Regular" (not Grand) Cherokees 84-01
ZJ: Grand Cherokee 93-98 (Gen1)
WJ: Grand Cherokee 99-04 (Gen2)
YJ: Wrangler 87-95 (Gen1)
TJ: Wrangler 97-06 (Gen2)

Default 97 used head on a 2000

so will a 97 #53020569 work in place of the 0331 from 2000? Is there much to alter to make it work?

53020569 is the block number. The heads on 1996-1999 XJ 4.0Ls are casting 0630.

The 0331 is different because it has bosses for mounting the coil rail and smaller/different shape exhaust ports - oh and also it's weak and cracks, but you probably know that already!

To run a 0630 in your 2000 you'll need to make some brackets to hold the coil rail up. Here are some simple straps someone else did on their Jeep:

To use the factory exhaust it's a good idea to buy an adapter to make the ports in the head to the manifold correctly. This avoids turbulence and burning up the gaskets. One guy makes and sells them here: https://jeepexhaustadapter.com/

If your 2000 is a Federal Emissions spec and only has one catalytic converter with the two O2 sensors, you have the option of installing an exhaust manifold for an older year. You'll need to change out the downpipe too. If you have the mini-cats then this isn't an option (the adapter is cheaper, anyway).

1996 model year 0630 heads had a little coolant temperature sending unit port at the back that can just be plugged. Shouldn't be drilled out on your '97's donor.

You can also get a 0331 TUPY revision from a 2002 or newer 4.0L, found in WJs and TJs. This revised casting does not crack like the first production run.

.
Huh? Why would he need to do that?? 0331 heads already have bosses on it for the coil packs.
