Default 4.0 leaking oil filter adapter

I did a search, but wasn't able to find what the size is of the bolt that holds the oil filter adapter onto the block. A T60 is too small, and once I got under there- I noticed that it was an allen head.

Does anyone know what size allen key I'll need to take the adapter off? I'd be nice if it was a T60... I have one of those; this allen key looks like it will need to be pretty big!

The Cherokee is a 93 model. Thanks for the help.

I just had to do this on my rig a couple weeks ago. Pretty straight forward fix. Might help having an extra set of hands though as it can a pain to position the adapter correctly and simultaneously tighten the torx bolt. By the way make sure you have a t60 short stlye torx bit for this job.

Thanks for the help guys, but like I said- the bolt that holds my filter adapter on is allen, not torx. I'm still trying to find out the size.

I have the part number for the factory gasket set, so I might ask one of the mechanics at the dealership what tool they use when I go up there to pick up the gasket set. Apparently this is a common spot for oil to leak at, and who knows if in 93 they used torx, or just allen bolts. Maybe I'll just stick in a hex bolt head in there to find the size. (or at least get close to it)

If its a big hex, I'm willing to bet it's a 3/8": made famous by GM for being used on their brake calipers.

Early(er) XJ's used a 9/16 hex head bolt.

Might want to spray some brake cleaner up there and go to town with a rag, double-check that you are not dealing with that type. Which way is you filter pointed? UP or BACK? the o-rings are different sizes between the two

If it's not, you just cleaned up some gunk you would have had to clean later on re-installation.

I have a 91 that uses the 9/16 HH and a 94 that has the T-60.

My 90 uses the T-60 and my old hunting Jeep (96) also had the T-60.

You and I had this discussion a few months back, didn't we?

I think there was a TSB on the leak and many XJs that went to a dealership got converted to T-60s. Thought I read that a few years back. So anyway the dealers changed the hex headed bolts to a T-60 if they came into their facilities.

I have not actually read the TSB but read that there was one on another forum. Issued about 10 or so years ago.

I bet you're right Howler- I bet it's a 9/16th key that will be needed. It's for sure bigger than 3/8.

I pulled the OE block out in exchange for another 93 model motor that I pulled from the junkyard (that I paid 75 bucks for, mind you on a 1/2 off weekend).

I'll check the OE block for the T60, and maybe just swap the two bolts.

The filter points toward the back (on both motors)

It sure is a tight fit right there between the frame rail.

Mine has the T-60 but i had to put the socket in place and then clamp onto the socket with vice-grips to break it loose.

The socket I used had a small hole on the inside, so I put it in the vise and used a puncn and shot the INSERT out. Was a 3/8" hex, so I used the insert and a 3/8" box wrench.
Took a little longer, but alot less grief. Well except for the countless times I dropped the insert.

Good thing there were no GFM's around.
