unless your clutch on your ac pump is messed up, it shouldn't have any more drag then an idler pulley when its off, you can unplug your ac compressor electrically for free nintey nine so it won't kick on when you run your defrost.
i wouldn't worry about the extra weight/inertia savings on spinning a pulley and the extra belt length, if your worried about it, I highly suggest getting something without a jeep badge or a 4.0.
i cant picture the routing in my head without looking at one so i cant tell you if you can or cant run it with out the ac pump or some pulley to bring the belt up in that region.Just dont want the belt rubbing on itself..

from everything I've found out, not without an idler pully.
It replaces the pully that is normally on the compressor.
Remove your ac compressor and put the pully in it's place and you get to run the STOCK belt. Very important on those days when you are miles from home and your belt snaps and you forgot the part number of the belt you jury rigged up when you took off the compressor.
These pullys can be found in just about any junk yard or to buy new are less than $50. Pretty cheap piece of mind if you ask me....... I quess you did ask didn't you LOL
