3 questions?
Hello I just purchased a 2000 a few weeks ago from a friend. I have a few questions maybe y'all can help with.
First off, the former owner said it had a cracked head. He drove it from Tennessee to Ohio every month. Before he would get to Ohio water would need to be added to keep it from over heating. I have driven it for about 1 1/2 hrs with no overheating and not haveing to add any water. The oil looks clean and I can not see any visible leaks. The moter runs smooth and does'nt smoke. So can it be a cracked head? Motor is a 4.0 with 233,000 on it.
Second, the electric fan will not work. When I run a jumper wire from the battery to the fan, it comes on. I have read on here that it could be a temp. switch. Any thoughts?
Third, the AC does not cool and the compressor clutch will not come on. Again I ran a jumper wire to the compressor and the clutch kicked in, but no cooling. Does this sound like I need freon or a compressor switch? My last cherokee had AC issues,I had to replace the compressor. I'm trying to save as much money for mods. Really don't want to replace anymore than I have too. Thanks in advance and great forum!

1. Could be. Maybe you could pressure test the cooling system, or find a shop that has one of those "sniffers" to check for exhaust gas in the cooling system.
2. I would just start going through the circuit and see where I lost power.
3. Could be either. Put a set o f gauges on it and see if it needs to be charged.

With my 01 XJ, the E-Fan will only turn on when the engine reaches 210 degrees. Not with the A/C.
Your A/C system may need a recharge. Get it done right at a shop where they can remove any refrigerant first then put a good vacuum on the system before they put the refrigerant in.

I let the motor idle for over 30 min the other day while waiting to see if the motor would overheat. It never did and the temp guage stayed at 210 or below. The e-fan never came on either.
I will try that. I'm a painter at a body shop. We have AC tools there. I just didn't want to start replacing switches when I did not need to. My wife just had a baby last week, everyone is back home now. Maybe I'll have more time this week to work on it. Thanks.
