I have a 2001 Cherokee Limited with 110,000 miles. Within the last couple of months, it will not start on the first time cranking. I will initially turn the key on, let it crank over for a few seconds, turn off the key, turn it over again and it will usually start the second time. If I turn it over within a few minutes after it has been running for awhile, it will start, but any other time it takes one to two trys before it will fire up.

Any ideas on a solution for this?

possibly ur fuel pump is about to crap out on u. ha it been doing it for a while or did it just start happening?

I've been dealing with it for about 5 months. It's been no big deal, but it is really starting to bother me and I would like to get it fixed before the cold weather hits...

mine does this also. but i eliminated the fuel pump theory by changing it for a new one. still have the problem. with 110,000 miles im assuming theres not a new starter in it. this is where my problem was. if you notice where chrysler put the starter in the cherokees, it is right underneath the oil filter. and as everyone knows jeeps like to spit oil here and there. so that was what my problem ended up being. i put a new starter in and redirected the oil leak to one of my skids, and have not had any hard starting since. it could be a few things with yours but you might be able to have your starter checked or rebuilt, or check the solenoid and your problem could be there... good luck

i've heard of this problem before. check your fuel pressure regulator. when your jeep sets for a while, the fuel pressure bleeds down. thats why it wont start the first time. it takes two maybe three times of cycling the key to get the fuel pressure back up to normal.

I don't think its the fuel pump either. Once it is running, it runs great.
How do I check the fuel pressure regulator?

x4 I have noticed a few threads that would better be suited for the regular tech forum. maybe a moderator could move it over.

but any way your coil could be slowly on its way out. dont think its got anything to do with fuel.

Sorry for posting in the wrong forum. I'm a newbie and wasn't sure were to post. Anyway, I purchased a new fuel pressure regulator and hopefully this weekend I will install. It looks like I have to drop the tank to install.

I will let you know if it solved my problem...

Mine had this issue (sort of) as well. I put a new battery in. Problem gone. I tested the fuel pressure and changed my fuel filters as well, thinking that may have been the culprit. My suggestion before dropping the tank out, would be to check the battery amps, an the fuel sending relays...Just my opinion.

Also have a similar issue but it starts 99% of the time on the first try but will crank for a few seconds before firing. If its been stopped for a short time it usually fires right up but there seems to be no set pattern to when it will or wont have trouble starting. Battery seems to read fine, so is it maybe the starter going out?

Was this ever resolved? I'm having the same issue. This morning I got in, dome light was on, turned the key, none of the gauges lit up and no start. Turned it two more times before it started. Any thoughts?
