No the plugs were dry and yes I was getting about 46 after 2-3 primes so it's not super strong but I don't think it's my issue

So no injector pulse (verify with noid light)? Can you reinstall the original PCM and what did you use for fuel injectors? This could all boil down to a wiring or corroded connector issue.

Yea I still have it and I used injectors from an 02 tj. And yea that's what I was thinking but I've checked the harness and sensor wires as well as the grounds but nothing has helped so far. Anywhere else to check?

PCM grounds the injector circuit to activate make sure all the connectors are solid. Since we suspect there is no fuel pulse here is a NOID if you can't find one local:

Do you have any unexplained coolant loss?

Not noticeably and I checked the oil and it doesn't really look murky or anything

I think the injectors are working because I can smell gas in the TB after trying to start, do you mean they could just be firing out of order or something?

The detergents in modern oils can mask coolant contamination until it gets really bad.

Your symptoms sounds like coolant getting into the cylinders, or a burnt valve.

Cracked head is not out of the question.

I'm not convinced the problem is electrical or fuel related.

Wouldn't those effect compression though? If not, can I just pull the valve cover and look around? I did get a puff of white smoke out of the valve cover vent earlier today is that a sign?

Good idea. Look for a broken valve spring.

Place each cylinder at TDC Compression and check the play in each rocker arm at that cylinder.

White smoke is burning coolant.

Look for a crack between #3 and # 4 cylinders on the head.

The factory 0331 heads on 2000-01 XJs are real prone to cracking there because of a factory casting flaw that exists in every one of them.

Some have said they can see it by shining a good light through the oil filler hole and looking at that area.

Ok I will pull the valve cover and check it out today. Would a cracked head or damaged valve still allow the compression to be so good though?

I also checked the valves today and nothing's burnt or broken and I didn't see any signs of burning coolant either...
