2.5 to 4.0 engine swap help

Engine: 2.5 Liter 4 Cyl.
2.5 to 4.0 engine swap help
I have a 93' Cherokee XJ with a 2.5L 4Cyl. engine, and I wanted to swap it out for the Jeep 4.0L Inline Six. What would I have to do to make it fit? I was hoping to just basically bolt it in, and keep the same transmission etc., and not have to change the mounts. Any info about this swap would be helpful.

why? for more power? 4.0 dont have much more power than the 2.5 does, believe me ive drove both. but if u are dead set on an engine swap, i would just go all out and do a LS1/350/GCV8 swap. from what i hear the LS1 swap would be your best bet if you could find one for cheep(alot more power, better mpg)

I've driven a 4cyl wrangler and 6 cyl cherokee, 6 has way more power.
You will need a new engine, tranny if you dont want to blow up the light duty ones that came behind the 4 cyl, some mods to the wiring harness and I think you even need a new computer, basicvally your best bet is to buy a junked 6cyl one and swap everything over.
Basically absolutely nothing in front of the firewall is compatible.

now passing power on the highway is a different story, but overall excelleration from stop is fine.....sorry off topic
what iiant says is true, alot of the parts firewall forward wont match up, but if i were you i would seriously look into a v8 swap, there are some that are just direct bolt in, just search around

I agree that a V8 will fit in the engine bay but, I wouldnt call any of them bolt in without mods to the engine bay or vehicle, i.e new motor mounts, lift to clear front axle, adapter to the trans, its definantely not someone should tackle as a first project. JMO

some only requre new motor mounts and a new transfercase but of course this is only hearsay, i dont have personal experience on this matter, only word from those around me

the 4cyl and 6cyl manual trans are different. the input shaft is a different length. i would look into smog laws in your area so you can keep it legal if you want. a bolt-in v8 for an xj? show me.

My XJ had 31's, the TJ had 31's, same difference.
And the V8 will bolt right in... after you replace your transmission, motor mounts and just about everything else on the vehicle. Once you do all that you can bolt it right in.
