Default 1999 Cherokee speakers

Hello. First post. I've done the requisite search for this info and haven't found a specific answer. My girlfriend has a 1999 Cherokee Classic. She wants new front speakers (the stock ones are dead) and I haven't been able to find the specific size for the stock speakers in this vehicle. Some places have both 5 1/4 and 6 1/2 listed as replacements that will fit. I know they BOTH can't fit in the original mounting bracket, so I need to know what's already in there. Short of pulling the door panel off, pissing her off, and giving away her Christmas surprise, I have no way of finding out...lol.

Thanks for any you can give me.

My 93 takes 5.25" all around... I realize there is a bit of a year difference so hopefully somoene will speak up with a Jeep closer in age to your girlfriends.

I'd check the wiring first. My 98 loses front speakers, and it's all with the wiring going into the door.

Thanks for the quick replies! I would just check the wiring, but she wants ones that glow blue. Short of setting them on fire, I'm at a loss as to how else to go about it...lol.

My 99 dose it on the drivers side speaker, even after I re-wired it. I can usually just tap on the door panel around the speaker a couple of times and it comes back.

My OEM speakers were 5.25 when I changed them back in the spring. I've heard that a lot of aftermarket 5.25's won't fit in the door though. I can't confirm this, as I upgraded to 6.5's up front when I replaced mine.

I think its just if you want to try and re-use the factory mounting, or if you're not afraid of trimming to remount the 6" in there. I know you can get WAY better speakers if you go with 6". And don't forget, if you plan on making a mess of your Yeep, you can always hit the boat shop to check out their selection of weatherproof/marine speakers. They come in handy if you have to hose out the interior...

I would pull the door panels if I was you.. Prove them wrong or right.. whichever. But it would make good confirmation... or conflict..

Just replaced mine.
(in the front doors)
Speaker size is 5 1/4".
FYI from bolt hole center to bolt hole center on the mounting tabs it is 6".
Mine is a '97 with the "infinity" sound system.
My Mopar dealer told me $98 for the factory stuff.
So i went and bought a pair of Pioneers for $59.95 from BestBuy.
Since i'm not really a "sterio guy" they seem o.k. so far.

The tabs werent as wide as the oem though, and i had to drill a couple of holes anyways.

I installed Infinity 6.5 with the dome tweeter above it. I had to pull the wiring out (what a pain) and re-wire a bunch of it as it had worn and created a short.

6.5 will fit nicely, depending on how deep they are...go to crutchfield and use their fitment guide, it will help alot.

On a side note I put 5.25's in the rear sound bar and could have fit 6.5's easily even though all suggestions said "no"

Yeah I just put infinity 6.5 in my head liner today and they fit really nice. The factory covers fit really well to. I also put alpine 5.25 in my doors and they really are to small for the factory mounting spots. In my opinion, Just put the 6.5 in the front and they will fit really good and sound great.

Good luck with the new thumps.

My 6.5's dropped right in up front....no trimming or extra other work required. And they're also Infinity's.

Stayed with 5.25 in the back.
