1998 xj CEL codes help
Hello
My CEL came on a couple days ago and I brought her into Advanced Auto Parts to get my codes pulled. I thought I only had one after doing the dash/lights self diagnostics test, but I really have 4.
P0113 - Intake Air Temperature Circuit High Input : I can tell that was the first code I knew about. I will replace the IAT, and that should take care of it.
P0463 - Fuel Level Sensor Circuit High Input : I'm not sure about this one. I thought usually when there is high OUTPUT something could be dead/blown....but high INPUT ? I'm a little stumpped.
P0700 - Transmission Control System Malfunction : I have no clue, I thought maybe it is related to the next code that is thrown....
P0705 - Transmission Range Sensor Circuit malfunction (PRNDL Input) : I think that this has something to do with the reverse lights not comming on. I tried to do the NSS overhaul - but I can't get the bugger off even following all the prying directions I found across the internet. I just gave up.
So my questions is can some one help me get a little more info about that 463 and the 700 codes that are being thrown ??
I just wondering if the 700/705 are related, and where would I begin to check for a fuel level high input ??
Thanks to all and anyone if they can help !! - Justin

From what I can find the first code indicates a hot air mixture or a malfunction of the IAT.
The second code I have never seen but you may have a bad ground on the fuel pump or sending unit for the gauge.
The third and fourth are related and you were headed down the right path with the NSS. You need to continue to work on getting it off and cleaning/rebuilding it.
Disclaimer: None of my current Jeeps have OBD so I am quite rusty on these type Jeeps so double check the things I have suggested as I am not as sure about the OBD Jeeps as I am about the Renix era Jeeps.

Ok great thanks for the reply !
I'll be diggin a bit deep this week once i get some more time to really get under her and make sure. I got to dbl check that NSS - hard to get off and I don't need to break it.
I did look a bit at the backside of my fuel tank/ My haynes man. says that there is a fuel sending unit, but I don't see it where it's picture in the diagram. I just found a connector attached to the underbody with some label attached to it. I might have to go back and check them diagrams a little more closley.
But again thansk for the reply ! - JUstin

The sending unit on 97+ XJ's is built into the pump assy.
P07XX codes are tranny/TCU related. The first step should be to pull and clean your NSS, the range selector signal goes through it.

Yeah , I figured that those 700 codes had something to do with my NSS. Like I said I tried, and couldn't get it off.
* Do you think PB Buster would hurt anything on the switch ?? *
I already tried to use WD-40, but to no avail. I wanted to use PB but I'm not sure if it will eat the switch..?
And along the lines of that 463 code, I have noticed something weird like this...
When I pull in the drive way (mostly when I notice it) at night, after I put her in park and turn off....I hear a 'chugging/gulping' nosie comming from around my fuel tank...?
Any more advice would be great ! Thanks again - Justin.

Oh I am aware. Heres my scenario...
I try to follow the diections that I got from the internet http://www.dirtdevils.org/XJNutralSwitch.htm
and http://jeepin.net/features/nss.
I get to the point where
but in my case I end up starting to strip the retaining nut. I don't want to keep prying on it with that method, just in case I totally strip it. Instead I tried wd-40 , I figured xj is almst 11yrs and probablly a life of dirt ant grime. That didn't work. I wanted to use PB, but I was affraid it would eat the switch and end up corroding it to the point where trying to take it off was done in vain.
So do you think it would hurt the NSS ??
I really never heard of any other methods to take the NSS off, does anyone else have a more creative solution ?
I apperciate the help and insight !! - Justin

I..threaded the retainer nut back on a couple of turns, then used a flat head screw driver to carefully pry the NSS off, using the lip of the tranny pan for leverage. This worked like a champ and didn’t damage the unit.

Frank is correct. Rocking it from different directions is a good plan. PB won't hurt the switch either. You just have to keep trying. Worst case is you break the switch and have to get a new one but it is preferable to starting in neutral everytime which is a precurser to not starting at all.
