Angry 1992 Jeep Cherokee Sport Starting/Stalling Problem

I have a 1992 Jeep Cherokee Sport 4.0 engine, manual trans 4x4. The jeep has been running fine for the last year since I bought it used. From one day to the next, as i was driving down the highway, I slowly started loosing engine power and had to drive home with a sputtering engine at about 15mph. Got home, turned the ignition off then I turned it back on. The engine has a sputtering start up with very low idle then immediately the rpms shoot up to 2000 and back down to low idle then dies. I do not have my foot on the pedal.

I disconnected the exiting hose from the fuel filter and it is pumping suffienent volume of gas. Prior to this incident, months ago, I changed the the spark plugs, spark plug wires, distr cap and air filter and catback exhaust system. Ran bad ***.

I cant understand what could cause this immediate change in performance. Any ideas where I should start or what I should replace to get this sick puppy back on the road?

Mine has been doing the same, it will idle down right to where its about to stall and then shoot right up. It also will do it while driving randomly and break up,then clears up. I was thinking dirty IAC or MAF?

I went through a similar problem last winter with my 92. I ended up replacing the plugs, wires, distributor, fuel filter, air filter, oxygen sensor, and the vacuum lines. It ran great after all that for a month or two, then it decided to start doing the random surge in RPMs at idle again. I ran a can of sea-foam through a tank of 93 octane fuel and it has been great all year. I don't know why, but Sea Foam seems to work wonders when all else fails.

Reemote,

Did you ever figure out what was causing these problems? Mine is now doing the same thing.

Thanks

my 92 was driving down the road, slowed down at a red light, and dead, nuttin, just straight shuts off. pull over, starts up, idles fine, then spits, sputters, and dies.. checked the pressure, and it's like it'll fill the line with fuel, then the pressure will steadily fall too zero, then the jeep dies.... full tune up with fuel filter, and seafoam through my tank.. still same thing.... ne body???? any thing???? i'm thinking fuel pressure regulator or fuel pump.. i'f nebody could help, it'd b awesome before i dump another $150 into it

My 92 did this a few years ago after stopping to get fuel on a long trip. Pulling a utility trailer with a motorcycle, aluminum fishing boat and furniture on the interstate about 600 miles.

At the time it felt like fuel pump failing. Has NOT done it since.

Have not changed the fuel pump. I did replace the gas tank before this happened. Previous owner had the pump replaced at the dealer in 2000something.

Since then I have only changed the oil/trans/coolant. Not any other engine repairs/replacements. Waiting for it to happen again I guess. Hasnt yet.

Maybe it's just the 1992s? lol.
