Default Electronic transponder ignition key?

I'm now thinking about an electronic transponder ignition key. I have a plain key with no electronics. It fits the door and works in the ignition switch to turn it. It cranks but won't start. I'd like to know how to get one that will work, or know how to disable that function.

Suggestions?

A crank but no start can be caused by many issues. Fuel system is one. Ignition system/coil etc is another. There are a lot of good people here that can help but, I think we all need some more info. Is it your Jeep, when did the problem start etc?

It would help to know what year is the Jeep. My 98 Cherokee SE doesn't have a transponder key. If the key you've mentioned has ever started the Jeep. You could probably take the key you have to a locksmith or some Walmarts and they can check the key you have to see if there is a transponder. Yes some people have had a key made that will only open the doors and so they can get in if they lock the keys in the car. Well good luck with your problem.

1998-'01 Cherokee (optional) for transponder keys

I'm now thinking of a number from 1 to 73, nothing up my sleeve, oh wait a minute...
If the key is grey it's chipped, if not it's black. If it's grey it requires a trip to the dealer or locksmith.

I got this Jeep cheap from a guy that rented a lot to the previous owner of the Jeep, who abandoned it. I finally found a key that fits all the doors and the ignition switch, but it's all metal. I found transponder keys online - 2 for $17. I went to a locksmith and the Jeep dealer. They both have equipment to program the keys, but I'd have to tow it 45 miles to town. I found a programming device online for $153 including shipping. It plugs into the OBDII plug and reads the code from the ECU, and programs the key that's in the ignition. I occasionally have other OBDII cars to work on, so I decided to try it. If it works, I'll eventually get my money back - meanwhile, I learn something new. I'll post the results when I get them. There are ways to bypass the immobilizer, but a chance to learn something new is hard to resist...

2001 Cherokee Sport. Fuel pump runs and fuel flows from the pressure check valve on the fuel rail. I haven't checked the pressure yet. I tried starting fluid to test for spark - nothing. This unit has a coil rail covering the spark plugs. I want to see what happens with a new key before I start tearing into it...
