Default 1990 Cherokee that hasn't run since 2003, need some help

Good Morning,

I just bought for my son a 1990 Jeep Cherokee Laredo 4x4 with 70,000 miles on it for $400.00 bucks anyway, the catch is it hasn't moved or run since 2003. It has the 4.0L I6 engine, and an automatic.

I'm working on getting it to run again, but I could use a layout diagram or photo that says what is what in the engine compartment. I'm reasonably savvy, but I don't know Jeep engines specifically and my internet searches are not coming up with all I need. I figured you fine folks on this forum might be some help here.

so far, I've pulled the plugs and shot penetrating oil in the bores, yanked the battery to replace and got all the tires back up and inflated. all the hoses seem fine, the coolant has rust in it, and I know to change the oil/drop the pan, flush the coolant, do all the normal tune up stuff and then some.

but there is some stuff under there I can't readily identify, so I'd appreciate some help.

have a great day
John

Go to your auto parts store and grab a chilton/haynes manual. Those will tell you what everything is and will pay for itself many times over.

I bought a '91 that had been sitting about that long, I found out there was gas in the tank and it had dissolved all the rubber on the fuel pump, so I ended up replacing it and it fired right up. I hope you have the same great luck that I did. Coach.

just change the fluids and see if it will start (maybe on ether, if theres no fuel in the tank) It will run, even on old fuel.

If you have anything you need identified, take a pic and we will help you.

Actually mine wouldn't run unless I poured gas down the TB and the tank was half full of 5 year old gas, I had thought it would've evaporated by then but it hadn't. Coach

Before you even try to start it, drain the old gas and replace with fresh gas. It will run on the old gas, but trust me. I work at a boat marina, I see it all the time with boats that sat for a couple years with no fuel stabilizer. The antiknock compounds break down over time, and the fuel also burns hotter for some reason. More power + less antiknock = bad news. Also, sediment has most likely settled to the bottom of the tank, and will get stirred up if the Jeep is driven under it's own power, causing it to run like crap. Drain the old stuff, fill it up with fresh gas, (perferably 91 octane, to help stabilize any old gas left) and add some fuel stabilizer. Should be good to go

I'd like to expand on what he said and add to defined change the coolant and oil before trying to start it.

Default more on the old cherokee

Hey everyone. thanks for all the tips.. here's more details of what's going on.

I don't have a good way to drain the gas, so I've put in some Stabil and a few gallons of good gas.

I have NOT tried to start it yet.

I've had penetrating oil sitting in it for a week now. (pulled the plugs and shot down the bores)

I'm going to swap the fuel filter before trying to start it
got a new battery for it.

I will change the oil and coolant after she fires up (got to get rid of the penetrating oil)

She has sat this long cuz the original owner sold it to a guy and he never picked it up. but he's a big time lawyer and its been at his mom's place all this time. right next to it is a 91 Camry in the same state of neglect. It ran when it was parked and has an '03 inspection sticker on it.

I'm hoping she'll fire this weekend, at which point every fluid in her gets changed, every hose for good measure. new plugs, new plug wires, distributer cap, etc..

One thing I would do is change the fuel pump, the fuel filter, and the fuel pressure regulator and possibly change the fuel injectors why you at it and you should have no problem getting it started and if it idles funny after that change the throttle position sensor and you'll be good.
