Post 1989 Cherokee Turn Signal help

Hey I still got my 1989 Jeep Cherokee, had a small problem the other day.. Went to go use my jeep and tryed using my turn signals worked fine... but by the time i got back to my place the turn signals wouldnt switch on. I thought it may be the fuse.. So i replaced it and tryed using the signals again, BUT this time grey/ white smoke started coming from my steering colum and the signals would flash for only a second at a rapid rate..

So what could be the problem ...

I was thinking it possibly could be my turn siganl flasher... which i am guessing is the round silver looking module that has two prongs on the back??? thats according to the manuel....:b rickwall:

could be a short or ground issue. check the steering column and do a write up on what you find.

you should check the blinker fluid...hahaha just kidding, if you had smoke coming from the column you've probably just got a loose wire short and it should be pretty easy to locate. Both my jeeps have quirks with the signals but I just hack it up to a jeep thing and let it ride. They work most the time but they occasionally lock up or dont work at all.
