RallyXJ rallying an XJ
A little out of the usual vein here, but cool nonetheless...
I recently spent a day at Colorado Off-Road Extreme in Deer Trail, CO participating in an autocross event. The autocross itself was OK, but running the full-length rally circuit was a blast. I showed quite a few Subies (and my buddy with the BMW) what an American classic can do!
Here is the rally circuit we raced on, probably about 2 miles long, and has some awesome elevation change, and a number of 30 degree banked corners.
VIDEOS
Since I have no idea how to embed, here are the links:
Videos of the rallycross course (read: slow and boring, you can skip these first ones if you want)
- My first run through the Rallycross course. Way tight and technical, challenging but not a huge amount of fun. I was running in 2WD.
- Second run, different point of view
- A start. Traction was limited.
Videos from the rally circuit (read: awesome)
First one is me losing control and flying off the track at about 70 mph. Too bad the guy's camera couldn't seem to focus until the last second, and there isn't really too much to see anyway.
Same episode, different camera and cameraman:
If I had pulled that stunt in a regular car, it would have been totaled, no question. I slammed through a few 3-4' berms before coming to a stop. The only casualty was one of my grille foglights which cracked off it's mount and had to be amputated.
- Tough turn, long off-camber and tightening.
- Best video of all, sweet S-turn driven semi-competently
- Same S-turn, worse driving. Hit the rev limiter on the exit!
- Same sweeper, with lights on!
Overall, it was a blast, and the XJ held up fine to some brutal thrashing. I drove it 500 miles home the next day!

Thanks all. It was even more fun than it looks!
CORE's site is here http://www.coloradooffroadextreme.com/. It's in Deer Trail, which is probably 45 min SE of Denver. According to the owner, you can just show up any random weekend, find the truck marked "CORE," pay them $15, and spend the whole day fooling around out on the courses. It's awesome.
And I actually just bought an '89 325iS to build for stage rally use. It will be awesome.
