I have considered doing the paint conversion mod, yes

But if I can find replacement panels that bolt on, I'm totally cool with that.

Yeah this is what I did. The interior of my XJ was tan and I took each piece out one at a time and sprayed them black with vinyl paint. Works good except if it's a heavy use area it can start to wear off
