That's a tough one

Probably the best compromise is going to be a standard turbo muffler. Decent flowing but not real loud. Our 4.0 engines drone like crazy. I was looking for the same thing you were and I went with these two mufflers:

Xlerator Resonator

Xlerator Muffler

At first I used a 18" body muffler but it just resonated way too much, plus it was pretty dang loud. So I switched to the 14" resonator and 14" muffler and it sounds much better. Not overly loud but you can still hear it when you want to.

1999 XJ 4door 2wd.

I want to order the Super 40 kit + a Magnaflow Cat, but I don't know which converter fits. I've read and re-read but I maybe just overlooked it? You guys have the best deal around and I want to give you my business.

Mudfrog.....looking to get a new cat. I see the Magnaflow 23226 on your site for my 96 XJ. Have a couple questions....

Is this a high flow cat? What's the inlet and outlet sizes? I have one of your Flowmaster Super 44 cat back systems installed. Had to weld the muffler inlet and stock cat outlet since the stock cat was smaller, so wanted to find out the specs on this Magnaflow cat ahead of time.

Thanks.

I'm showing your converter is 2.5" in and 2.25" out. If you go with our kit then order a 2.5" converter as it will match the rest of our exhaust system.

It's high flow compared to OE, but will flow like a normal universal converter. It is a 2.25" converter.

It's almost impossible to get both, especially out of an inline 6 since they drone so badly. Your best bet would be to go with our large 5x11x22 MagnaFlow or Knock off muffler. The only catch is it is a 3" muffler so you would need to use some reducers. Otherwise a 50 series Flowmaster wouldn't be real loud either, however the MagnaFlow style will flow better.

The 44's will be louder. The offroad series will have a diamond plated body as opposed to the standard style.

Just the hanger and a reducer if you do not currently have 2.5" on your cherokee.
